The assault on Bork September 29, 1758

Ah, the second week of vacation, and isn't it always that the week before vacation, the weather is warm, sunny, and the vacation arrives and the weather is a mix of sunny, then rainy and the tempreture drops!

Perfect wargamming weather.

The French advance up the road.

In this action Ian took the French. I was the Allied.

The French advanced up the road, then deployed the majority of their cavalry into the woods seeking out skirmishers.
The Hessians had deployed a mixed brigade and a gun at the head of the road. The French continued up the road and were charged by the 17th Light Dragoons. The Hessians and Brunswickers poured volleys into the French as they deployed into line. The French were a mix of infantry companies.
The RA were able to mow down files of French and disrupt the French horse. The 17th Lt. Dragoons had been able to charge at the French supply wagons but were then decended upon by the French Hussars and Russians Cossacks. Finally, with the 88th Highlanders charging into the French line,

they began to fall back. By the end, the supply wagons were able to flee while the Artillerie Royale were destroyed by the Hessian guns.
To keep Ian's feelings in check it was declared a draw.

The Battle of Garcia Hernandez July 23, 1812

This refight was to see how the action would play out.
This battle is known in military history as one of the few chances where cavalry have broken and infantry square!
During the refight, one French battalion formed square, survived some infantry then were able to flee to the heights above the village of Garcia Hernandez.
The 1st and Light Divisions then advanced into the village having chased the French 6eme into the alleys. After a brisk volley from the 60th Royal American Regiment, the French 6eme fled onto the ridge. The British 12th Lt. Dragoons then charged through the village to block a French retreat. The 42nd Royal Highland Regiment, the Black Watch and the 79th Regiment, Cameron Highlanders then formed line and charged the ridge. The Black Watch took heavy casualties but took out the French guns. Finally, with the Cameron Highlanders levelling their bayonets, the remaining French infantry fled. The only change to this battle, the King's German Legion heavy dragoons were decimated by French musketry when the German's attempted to block the French retreat.

A little more background information on me and my son

Greetings and salutations to one and all. My name is Rod Redden, a Canadian expat teaching English in Japan. Since I was a child, I have collected plastic 1/72 figures. My collection started somewhere around 1978 and includes such illustrious companies such as Airfix, Esci, Italeri, and Revell. More recently, the ranks of my plastic have been joined by new comers Zeveda, Strelets, and Mars.

This blog is intended to showcase what my son and I play with whenever we have the chance. I'm not very tech savy, and despite living in Japan and playing with toy soldiers, I do not fall into the “otaku” geek category, maybe a little eccentric, but hey, if you are checking out this site, maybe we share something in common

My collection is about 90% plastic with some metal figures. However, the majority of my collection, say about 60% is in storage in Canada (say about 9000 figures, which actually outnumbers the regular force of the Canadian army!) I began teaching EFL (English as a Foreign Language) in 1996 first in South Korea and then moved on to Japan in 1999 where I have been ever since. I did make a 9 month honeymoon with my wife and kids in Canada in 2003-04 then returned to Japan to continue my career as an English teacher.

When I was a single guy in Japan, I spent a lot of time and money on beer, cold war figures, more beer, pizza and more figures. By the time I met my future wife, I had acquired quite a bit of figures for the 1940-1990 age. This took in the Second World War as well as the Cold War. When I moved back to Canada, all of this collection went into storage and some play between my work as a cook in a pub, or as a security guard. When I returned to Japan, to keep my sanity, I packed my Napoleonic figures as I have never really painted them up, mounted them nor played many games. However, my game time was a bit hampered by work and more importantly two additions to my family.

Five year later, my son is now interested in playing with Daddy's toys. As he enjoys pirates and my stories of reenacting 18^th century Nova Scotian life, I have gone back to my favorite period, 18^th century wargamming.

Overtime, I shall post pics of refights my son and I play, as well as older shots of myself and my kids playing games.

For Christmas 2011, I'm planning on refighting some of the 18th century battles which were fought in North American in particular some of the large and small actions around Nova Scotia.
