The Fenian Raids 1866-71

British North America became the Dominion of Canada on July 1, 1867, due to an armed invasion by Irish nationalists who believed that they could capture Canada, hold it for ransom and trade it for Irelands freedom from the British Empire.

The first major action was the Battle of Ridgeway in 1866. It was fought in Upper Canada (modern Ontario)
The Fenians had formed up in upper state New York, then crossed the Niagra river. The local military force in Upper Canada at that time was made up of Canadian militia.
